‘Any of them’- Team Keane McMahon have Irish title message for ALL eligible welters

Team Keane McMahon want an Irish title shot before the end of the year and have issued an open call out to all Irish 147lbs fighters.

Speaking to Irish-boxing.com the Dubliner’s manager, David Murphy was adamant it is time for Irish welterweight’s to start stepping up to the domestic plate.

McMahon will look to bounce back from his Celtic title reverse with a good win on the Celtic Clash 9 card set for Belfast and October 11.

‘The Iceman’, who lost out in unbeaten Scot Dean Sutherland in Aberdeen in May, won’t be handed a gimme return and has agreed to fight a ‘solid English opponent’.

The idea behind the non routine return is to ensure the 25-year-old is primed for a shot at the green strap ideally on Celtic Clash 10, although the fighters team are open to travelling just to try and get their hands on the belt.

In fact Murphy is taking a ‘fight anyone, anywhere, anytime’ stance with regard to the Irish strap.

Peter McDonagh was the last person to win the strap when he beat Dean Byrne back in 2015, before that Stephen Haughian when he dethroned Billy Walsh in 2009.

The welterweight division is a populated one at present. McMahon is currently ranked 9th by the BUI but is willing to fight anyone at the weight for the title.

“Keane comes back with a good fight,” Murphy told irish-boxing.com.

“He faces a tough English lad and we are happy with that, but after this one we want the Irish title. We will fight any of them for it. If Noely Murphy wants to do it here or in American we will.  We’d fight Rohan Date he has spoken about wanting to fight for the title. If Jay Byrne wants it that would be a good fight for Dublin would we’d do it in Scotland if he wants. Dylan Moran the same, we can go to Waterford if he wants a homecoming fight there. Tell any of them we are here and we want to fight for the Irish title.

“There has been a lot of talk since Keane turned over about these welterweight’s fighting each other. There is a good bunch of them there now and there are good fights there. I just want it to be known that we want the Irish title, we will fight any of them for it. Those at the weight know what to do to make it happen.”

In terms of Celtic Clash 9 McMahon becomes the latest addition to a stacked card.

The ‘Iceman’ man’s bout joins joins the headline clash between Joe Fitzpatrick and Iago Barros for the BUI Celtic title along with a number of all-Irish fights. At lightweight, Stephen Webb takes on Martin Quinn, Aiden Metcalfe faces Kelvin McDonald at super featherweights, while Conor Cooke fights Staz Tomasevsk and Sean McGlinchey and Julio Cesar lock horns.

Also confirmed for the bill in recent days were debuts for Senan Kelly, Tony McGlynn, and Conor Doherty, along with Jamie Douglas and Aaron Gethins, while Eddie Treacy, Owen O’Neill and Sam Carroll are also slated to appear.
