Another good day for Ireland at World Junior Championships

By Bernard O’Neill – IABA Press Officer

Tuesday schedule here
Cork middleweight Tommy Hyde progressed to the quarter-finals of the AIBA World Junior Championships in St Petersburg, Russia tonight.

The Leesider beat Algeria’s Djallal Bouchkouk on a unanimous decision and will now meet Turkey’s Bayren Malkan for at least a bronze medal on Wednesday.

Joe Nevin and Jimmy O’Reilly bowed out of the tournament today and this evening against the USA and Russia. Nevin left absolutely everything between the ropes against American fly Ray Diaz only to agonisingly lose on a split, and O’Reilly produced a big, big performance against Russia’s Vladislav Ivanov at light-heavy.

Ivanov was favourite going into this clash, but O’Reilly met fire with fire in an excellent 80kg clash and rattled his opponent with big shots throughout, particularly in the third round.

“The fight of the tournament so far, a real toe-to-toe battle between two excellent boxers, said Irish coach Billy McClean.

“They both received a standing ovation and the Russian lad very sportingly gave Jimmy a round of applause. It was a wonderful performance from Jimmy against an opponent who is a favourite to take the gold medal.

“We’re delighted with all our boxers today; Tommy, Aaron and Paddy were excellent and Joe and Jimmy lost on very close decisions.“

Earlier today, Irish captain Aaron McKenna and Paddy Donovan claimed victories.

McKenna obliged Abine Bennams of France to take two standing counts en route to an emphatic verdict and Donovan beat highly-rated Kazakh lightweight Abylay Ybraimov.

McKenna, Donovan, Eamer Coughlan, Paul Ryan and Sean Purcell will be in action tomorrow. The Irish camp confirmed this evening that Anthony Johnston has been withdrawn from the tournament after picking up an illness.
