Barry McGuigan is known for throwing every punch from ringside while Carl Frampton is in the ring.

While his son Shane boxed, the elder McGuigan was ejected from the corner in three of his son’s four fights during his 2008 National U-21 winning campaign.

It’s fair to say that Barry wears his heart on his sleeve.

Now into the promotional side of things following his brief spell as a trainer, McGuigan has not lost any of his exuberance.

The enthusiastic former WBA featherweight champ saw his protege win the belt he had claimed 31 years ago and was overcome with emotion throughout.

The Clones Cyclone cried in the aftermath of the majority decision verdict over Leo Santa Cruz which crowned ‘The Jackal’ champion, and a tearful McGuigan told BBC Radio 5 live that “this is one of the greatest nights of my life.”

“It was so amazing.”

So passionate was the Monaghan man, he found himself in trouble during the bout, and he explained that “I annoyed the officials.”

“The officials warned me several times.”

“I screamed my head off, I’m almost hoarse.”

“I nearly deafened the judge who was beside me.”

With the belt in the bag, McGuigan was able to joke, “I wonder was he the one who gave it the draw.£
