Aiden Metcalfe happy to prove pro pedigree with tough debut win

Aiden Metcalfe believes he proved that he is ready for the pro game with a hard-fought victory on Saturday night.

The former Crumlin amateur didn’t have it all his own way in one of the tougher debuts tests on the Celtic Clash 3 card.

Late replacement Damian Lawniczak came to fight and Metcalfe had to dig deep to squeak a 39:38 win on the card.

The super featherweight, who was due to box Dawid Knade, instantly took confidence from putting a name both Jono Carroll and Eric Donovan have on their record on his own slate.

Metcalfe admits he has to learn on the job, but was delighted post fight.

“I got the win. I happy with the performance for my first fight. He was in with Jono Carroll and Eric Donovan so it shows I am up there with them,” he told Irish-Boxing.com after the clash.

22 year old Metcalfe, like his brother Evan, was an amateur of note, but claims he was just short of shocked by the difference in the approach of amateur to pro foes.

“He was a tricky opponent and I couldn’t get my shots off like I wanted. Every time I tried to get off he would hold and grab me, but I got the win that is the main thing.”

“It is a massive change to the amateurs, a whole different style of fighting. They want to stop you for fighting instead of wanting to fight with you. I didn’t think it would be that different.”

With the adrenaline of victory and combat running through his body after the win, the Sean Carton-trained Metcalfe claimed he was ready to fight Sunday, but did reveal November looks like the next time we will see him in the ring.

“During the week the excitement is great. I really couldn’t wait to get in there. Nervous energy got me in the first round, but I am buzzing still now. I got in I got the debut out of the way and got a win.”

“I can’t wait to get back out again. I’d do it all over again tomorrow, but it looks like I have to wait till November.”
