Aaron McKenna secures step-up in first fight of 2019

Aaron McKenna [6(4)-0] will be back in the ring next month for the first time in 2019.

The teenage Monaghan prospect has been confirmed for the Golden Boy Promotions card at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California, on Saturday March 30th.

McKenna has been handed a good hard six rounder for the bill, being matched with Loretto Olivas [3(1)-0].

The New Mexico 26-year-old debuted last May and has racked up three wins at his local venue, the Buffalo Thunder Casino in Pojoaque.

The Sinaloan fighter has campaigned in and around light middleweight and looks, on paper, to be McKenna’s biggest and toughest opponent to date and one who will be coming looking to cause a scalp.

McKenna enjoyed a strong 2018, fighting five times and making the step up to six rounds in the last of these.

The Smithborough 19-year-old was back in Ireland over Christmas, training with his brother Stevie throughout under father Fergal at their home gym. The past few weeks, though, the McKennas have been back in Los Angeles with South African coach Courage Tshabalala.

McKenna is looking to progress quickly in 2019 and aims to be fighting for a rankings title by the end of the year before going on to world honours in 2020.

Next month’s card will be headlined by lightweight sensation Ryan Garcia who takes on Jose Lopez, with further undercard support from Joet Gonzalez, Antonio Orozco, Danielito Zorilla, Neeco Macias, Herbert Acevedo, Rommel Caballero, and a WBO light flyweight title defence from Angel Acosta versus Ganigan Lopez..

The bill will be shown live on DAZN.
