Amy Broadhurst moves to within one win of first major International senior medal

Amy Broadhurst moved to within one win of a first  major International senior medal with victory in Madrid this afternoon.

The reigning National Elite 64kg champion looked at home at her natural 60kg weight and eased to an unamious last 16 points win over  Dominika Ciklova  of the Czech Republic in the European Championships.

The Dundalk BC fighter, who has also represented Islington of London in the English ABA’s, played matador to Ciklova’s bull and out boxed a game foe.

It was calm, confident and so impressive for Broadhurst that she secured an unanimous decision victory winning every round bar one on the five judges scorecards.

The Czech fighter was game and aggressive in the opener, but was more often than not walked on to well timed southpaw shots from the Dundalk favourite.

The second played out in similar fashion as the Ciklova tried to apply pressure, but Broadhurst had way too much for her in terms of skill and timing. The Louth fighter landing clean and concise shots at will.

The Irish fighter brought the cheek hook and upper cut into play in the third and again won the round in relative style, but much to her opponents credit she continued to march forward and at the very least was making Broadhurst work for every minute of every round.

The two time Junior European champion, European youth champion and reigning Under-22 European champion is now just one win away from a medal at the senior European Championships.

The victory see’s her progress to the quarter final, a stage she exited last years World Championships at in the most dramatic and controversial of fashions.

The Dundalk southpaw will now meet Russia’s 2014 World Elite champion Anastasia Belikova, the No. 3 seed in the Spanish capital, for at least bronze in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Finland’s No. 1 seed and current European Elite lightweight champion Mira Potkonen, who beat Katie Taylor at Rio 2016, edged England’s Paige Murney on a split decision today to book her ticket into the last eight.

Roscommon’s Aoife O’Rourke has a chance to secure a bronze medal at least when she meets Ukraine’s Tetiana Petrovich in the middleweight quarter-finals later this afternoon.

Ceire Smith, who racked up a stunning win yesterday, boxes at 5-30pm versus Turkish flyweight Naz Buse Cakiroglu in the last 16.

Cork welter Christina Desmond is in last 16 action action on Tuesday.
