Ulster fighters to face Nicaraguans on opening Belfast show

The identities of the opponents for the first Irish show of 2018 continue to be revealed.

Saturday February 3rd sees MHD Promotions return to the Europa Hotel in Belfast for ‘Assassin’s Creed’ and we are starting to get a clearer picture of the card.

Super featherweight Feargal McCrory [7(3)-0] and featherweight Stevie Quinn [8(2)-2(0)] both feature on the dinner show against good Nicaraguan opposition.

Unbeaten ‘Fearless’ Feargal will attempt to make Rafael Castillo his eighth pro victim as he looks to start what could prove a big year.

Castillo comes to the Europa with a record of 14(6)-39(14)-3 and most would expect the 57 fight veteran to be defeated by the all action John Breen-trained fighter.

However, the journeyman is known for his entertaining and attacking approach, and should provide the all-action McCrory with a willing foe.

At the same time, the Coalisland native will be eager to win in style after an illness hampered display in a swing bout on the October Matchroom show at the SSE Odyssey Arena.

Belfast fans will be all to aware of Castillo as he has fought Scot Ronnie Clarke in the city as well local favourite James Tennyson.

The Spanish-based fighter has also been used as a learning fight for a number of British prospects of late and fought 10 times in 2017.

Also based in Barcelona is Edwin Tellez [12(6)-34(4)-5] and the Nicaraguan provides the surprisingly strong comeback opposition for Quinn Jr.

The rarely-stopped Central American takes on Quinn over six rounds in what will be the Ards boxer’s first fight in over two years.

Tellez, like Castillo, is relatively one of the better Nicaraguan journeymen and provided a small step up to Tyrone McCullagh at the same venue back in October 2016.

Indeed McCullagh and world title chaser Josh Warrington are the only fighters to have stopped the busy away fighter over the past four years.

The card next month is headlined by James Tennyson and also features Lucas Ballingal v Dubliner Karl Kelly, the return of Dan McShane, and Ronnie Clark.

Belfast lightweight Joe Fitzpatrick no longer features.
