Youth Olympic Games – FULL DRAW

Sligo flyweight Dean Clancy will be involved in the first bout of the boxing programme at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires.

The draw has been made for the boxing tournament in Argentina and none of Ireland’s three fighters have received byes, meaning all will be in action on Day 1.

European Youth and Junior silver medallist Clancy boxes African champion and Worlds quarter-finalist Hichem Maouch of Algeria at 5:00pm (all times Irish time).

Triple European underage bronze medallist Lauren Kelly, of St Brigid’s Edenderry, is in action in the last bout of the afternoon session at around 8:00pm. Kelly has a tough task in Russian quadruple European and double World gold medallist Anastasia Shamonova who has beaten the Irishwoman before and has only ever lost twice in her career..

Finally, in the last bout of the evening session at around half past midnight, Leitrim featherweight Dearbhla Rooney boxes American Roma Martinez who will be making her major tournament debut.

Any Irish winners will progress to the semi-finals however this will not guarantee a bronze medal. Unique to the Games, losing semi-finalists must box-off for the third spot on the podium. This happened at the last Youth Olympics in Nanjing where Michael Gallagher won a bronze medal but Christina Desmond lost her box-off.

Ireland won gold through Ryan Burnett in the inaugural Games in 2010 and this was followed by Gallagher’s bronze and Ciara Ginty’s silver in 2014.

82 boxers from 38 countries weighed-in for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.
