World Title Final Eliminator CONFIRMED for Jono Carroll

Jono Carroll [16(3)-0] will look to become the IBF World Title mandatory challenger this coming December.

The Dublin super featherweight has been in talks with French former European champion Guillaume Frenois [46(12)-1(0)] in recent weeks and a deal has been reached for a final eliminator between the organisation’s two highest ranked fighters.

The winner of the bout – which will take place at a to-be-confirmed date and venue in December – will become the mandatory challenger and the next opponent for the winner of champion Tevin Farmer’s voluntary defence versus Belfast’s James Tennyson in Boston on Saturday October 20th.

The 26-year-old had been calling for a fight previously with Philly’s Farmer and has already stated that he will stop the winner of the bout at the TD Garden but he will have to get through an extremely experienced opponent first.

35-year-old Frenois has held the French, EU, and European titles over the years and had been ordered to go into talks with Devis Boschiero, the only man to defeat him, regarding a final eliminator only for the Italian to pull out and the slot to go to the next-in-line Carroll.

The Gaul has been ticking over following his final defence of his European title last year versus Ruddy Encarnacion with two stoppage wins over journeyman opposition.

‘King Kong’ Carroll has roared into title contention over the past 12 months – first winning the IBF Inter-Continental rankings belt versus Humberto De Santiago last October before defending the strap in a much-anticipated rematch versus Declan Geraghty back in June.

Following these performances on the BT Sport platform, the Finglas-born, Dunshaughlin-raised, Marbella-based puncher re-signed with Matchroom Boxing having previously been under the banner following his Prizefighter Lightweights win back in 2014.

According to Eddie Hearn, there is a to-be-announced Matchroom show in the UK on Saturday December 8th and a potential Matchroom USA show on Saturday December 15th before a mooted pay-per-view heavyweight grudge rematch between Dillian Whyte and Dereck Chisora at the O2 Arena in London on Saturday December 22nd.

Of course, should Tennyson upset ‘The American Dream’ Farmer this month and Carroll comes through Frenois in December, it would give rise to the first ever all-Irish World title fight.

A date and venue for the fight is expected to be announced in the coming days.
