“Why would you do that as a fighter?” – Bored Katie Taylor questions Cindy Serrano

Katie Taylor [11(5)-0] admits she got bored midway through her routine win over Cindy Serrano.

The Puerto Rican was meant to represent Taylor’s toughest test to date. A 35 fight veteran, who has finished every fight she started, won a world title at featherweight, and competed as high as welterweight.

However, Taylor recorded one of her easiest pro career wins in Boston, outpointing a negative and reluctant  to engage Serrano.

The WBA and IBF lightweight champion came away with her titles after a 100-90 x3 victory against an opponent that has been criticised for seemingly entering the bout with no ambition to win and just wanting to survive..

Indeed Serrano offered so little that Taylor admits she got ‘bored’ during the fight.

“I got quite bored half way through the fight, actually,” she admitted after the TD Garden-hosted clash.

“I really did expect my toughest fight to date.”

Serrano was chosen as a Taylor foe in part to help build a showdown with her six-weight world champion younger sister Amanda but was also deemed ideal dance partner for the Olympic gold medal winner to put on a show.

Known as a high-volume puncher, a fire-fight in front of thousands of Irish and Irish-American was hoped for in a contest that was shown live on Sky Sports and new U.S. streaming platform DAZN.

However, 36-year-old Serrano didn’t play her part, spoiling the fight as a spectacle somewhat, and Taylor was both frustrated and surprised at her opponents tentative approach.

The Brian Peters-managed fighter claims she would prefer to go out on her shield than just enter the ring to survive.

“She really wasn’t doing much at all. I was very, very surprised.”

“I had a lot of respect for Cindy coming into this fight. It was quite disappointing that she was just in there to survive for the ten rounds.”

“I thought she was going to give it everything she has but she was just quite happy to survive for the 10 rounds…why would you do that as a fighter? Just give it your all.”

“I would actually prefer to be knocked out while giving my all rather than survive the 10 rounds,” added Taylor pointedly

So bored and frustrated did Taylor get at times that for the first time in her pro or amateur career she indulged in some theatrics.

There had been brief moments in the Jessica McCaskill fight last year but it was a whole different story here, with the Bray boxer dropping her hands contemptuously, waving Serrano in, and even offering her a free shot.

“I was just trying to enjoy myself in there tonight. I did actually get caught with a jab when I did do that, I was mortified,” she joked.

“When you’ve someone so defensive like that it’s important to just relax and enjoy it.”
