‘Why didn’t he call me?’ – Quigley disappointed in Macklin’s method of criticism

Jason Quigley would have preferred if Matthew Macklin used his phone to place a call rather than go on Twitter last week.

The Golden Boy fighter was somewhat upset the former European, British, and Irish middleweight champion took to Twitter to air his concerns for Quigley post the Donegal middle’s defeat to Tureano Johnson.

The 28-year-old agreed with some points raised by the now respected Sky pundit with regard to how he has been managed.

However, he felt those concerns would have been better shared personally rather than on social media.

Speaking honestly and openly on Off the Ball the World Championship silver medal winner said the pair had discussed the topics raised before and claimed the could have done so again in private.

“I know Matthew very well and I was a bit disappointed to see him come out so publicly. I have his number and we’ve talked about it before,” said Quigley.

“If he really wanted to help and was really that concerned about it why didn’t he call me? He didn’t have to go out and fire it all over social media.”

Quigley also discussed the possibility of an immediate rematch.

Like more fighters the 160lbs prospect is keen to avenge the defeat and revealed his heart wants wants him him to do that immediately.

Yet Quigley is smart enough to know there is a reason why an instant return is always advised against in boxing and will look to return against another fighter.

“There are two personalities, there’s the fighter in me that says I want to avenge the defeat.

“That’s my heart speaking – my pride and passion – but I know in my head it would be silly to step back in the ring against Tureano.”
