‘What’s a journeyman?’ – Wells not daunted by Gallagher step-up

Liam Wells claims he had no clue what a journeyman was before he turned to boxing and claims he has no desire to get to know them in the pro ranks.

The former kickboxing world champion has made an impressive start since crossing codes and taking up boxing.

‘Wellsy’ beat a fellow undefeated novice in his third fight and registered somewhat of a scalp by defeating tricky opponent Jumanne Camero in his last outing.

Now after just five pro outings the 25-year-old takes a serious step up in class to fight BUI and BBBofC Celtic title winner and former amateur of note Paddy Gallagher on the #MTKFightNight this coming Friday.

It seems brave from the Essex puncher, but he claims he knows no other way than to test himself as the idea of learning on the job or building records don’t exist in the previous combat sport he mastered.

Speaking ahead of this Friday’s Ulster Hall-hosted bout Wells said: “I’m not bothered about fighting anyone. There’s no point in hiding from people.”

“You don’t get journeymen in kickboxing so when I turned professional in boxing, I genuinely didn’t even know what one of them was.”

“I’ll be expecting the best Paddy Gallagher in there on the night because there’s no point in banking on false hope.”

“This could open some big doors for me and change absolutely everything. I’m not looking past this fight but it’s obvious to anyone that it’s my biggest one yet.”

Wells was last seen turning in an assured performance to outclass former Southern Area champiOn Camero, while Gallagher suffered a controversial WBO European title defeat to Freddy Kiwitt.

Joining Gallagher vs. Wells on a stacked bill at the famous Belfast venue is a WBO European light-heavyweight title showdown between Steven Ward and Liam Conroy, a WBC Silver super-lightweight title clash between Tyrone McKenna and Darragh Foley, local knockout king Lewis Crocker against former French champion Karim Aliliche and more.
