It was an up-and-down weekend for Irish boxing in Britain over the weekend with both wins and losses.

Starting us off on Friday night in Scotland, Ballyfermot light welter Stephen Carroll moved to 4(1)-0 with the first stoppage win of his career. The Dubliner stopped Scot Darren Da Prato in the second round of their fight on the Prospect Boxing card at the Alona Hotel in Motherweill.

On the same card, Ulster journeyman Casey ‘The Kid’ Blair went four rounds with Scottish light middleweight prospect Michael McGurk.

Topping the bill in Motherwell, Donegal’s Shaun McShane took on Eddie Doyle in a rematch of the controversial first bout for the Scottish light welterweight title. There would be no revenge for the Rosses man who lost 95:98 on the referee’s card and fell to 4(0)-4(0)-1.

On Saturday the big card came at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham, with Frankie Gavin being stopped in the eighth round of his grudge match with Sam Eggington. 31 year old Gavin falls to 23(14)-3(2) following the loss on the Sky Sports card but has vowed to fight on.

On the undercard in Britain’s second city, middleweight Irish Tommy Carter was stopped in the third round of his clash with Ryan Kelly, but disagreed strongly with the referee’s decision and looks set for a rematch in December.

Topping the Boxnation bill at the Bolton Whites Hotel, Swindon-Donegal middleweight Jamie Cox moved to 21(12)-0 following a foul-filled comeback win against Argentine Martin Fidel Rios which, after five points deductions, was scored 98:86. On the undercard in Bolton journeyman Paul O’Brien got the rounds in with Arthif Daniel.

Finally, at the Bowlers Exhibition Centre in Manchester, Michael Gomez Jr score a four-round points win over Youssef Al Hamidi to move to 6(1)-0.
