WBO champion Oscar Valdez preparing for Carl Frampton fight

WBO featherweight world champion Oscar Valdez is back in training and targeting a fight with Carl Frampton.

The Mexican has been out injured since March after breaking his jaw in a successful title defence against Scott Quigg, an injury which ruled him out as a possible opponent for Frampton’s August 18th Windsor fight night.

However, the 27-year-old is now back in training and wants to fight ‘The Jackal’ in the ‘near future’.

Frampton faces Luke Jackson next month and if he emerges victorious the WBO interim title holder looks set to go the IBF route and challenge Josh Warrington in Manchester some time in December.

December could still prove to soon for Valdez and his team have stated that they want a less challenging fight to return with, which could lead to a unification bout with the 31-year-old Belfast fighter early in 2019 if Frampton beats promotional stablemate Warrington.

Valdez himself has said that he wants Frampton in his return fight although this looks unlikely – and the London Olympian has also spoken of unifications with Leo Santa Cruz (WBA) and Gary Russell Jr (WBC).

While it most likely won’t be their next fight, a clash with Frampton is most definitely on the wish-list for Team Valdez.

“He’s already back working out and getting prepared in Mexico. Oscar loves this game, it’s difficult to keep him away from this. He really loves boxing and he wanted to start working again,” Frank Espinoza, Valdez’s manager, told BoxingScene.com.

“We want to make this clear though – we will not schedule anything till he is medically cleared and given a clean bill of health,” Espinoza added before addressing Frampton.

“That is absolutely a fight we want to do in the very near future,” stated Espinoza.

“Oscar wants all the big names at 126 and Frampton is certainly one of the best fighters in the weight class and it’s a major fight that is on our radar.”

“It’s one of the best match-ups that can be made in the sport.”
