Waterford middleweight to debut next month

Another new fighter is to join the ever-growing Irish pro scene.

Today it was confirmed that Waterford middleweight Craig McCarthy will make his professional debut next month on the Red Corner Promotions ‘Champions Elect’ card at the National Stadium on Saturday October 7th, becoming the final fighter added to the card

A former Irish Universities champion, McCarthy entered the Elite Seniors five times, where he was defeated by Olympians Adam Nolan, thrice, and Steven Donnelly, twice.

The St Paul’s southpaw has been training for a pro debut since the start of the Summer, working in Dublin at Steven O’Rourke’s St Michael’s gym in Inchicore.

McCarthy become the third current pro from the St Paul’s club following welter Rohan Date [3(1)-0] and light heavy Barry Barnes, who is yet to debut. Then there is Dungarvan welter Dylan Moran [1(0)-0] along with amateur talents such as Rhys Moran and Kelyn Cassidy.

Waterford boxing certainly is on the up.

The ‘Champions Elect’ card also features Irish champion Paddy McDonagh, debutant Karl Kelly, Jake Best, the return of Allan Phelan, Victor Rabei, a fight between super middleweights Vladimir Belujsky and Manny Bique, and BUI Celtic title fights for Craig O’Brien, Chris Blaney, and Noely Murphy.

Tickets for the night cost €40 (gallery) and €60 (ringside)
