WATCH: Spine-tingling promo to commemorate fifth anniversary of Katie Taylor’s Olympic gold

Five years ago on a sunny Thursday afternoon Katie Taylor firmly underlined her name in the pantheon of Irish sporting greats.

The Wicklow lightweight packed out the ExCel Arena in London, with thousands watching in the open air in Bray and millions watching on their televisions around Ireland, as she claimed the inaugural Women’s Lightweight Olympic gold.

Nerves were shredded as she edged past long-time Russian rival Sofya Ochigava, climbing off the canvas in the final round to claim a 10-8 points win and Irish sporting immortality,

It was the ultimate achievement for Taylor whose own performances in the preceding years having been one of the factors that eventually prompted the inclusion of Women’s Boxing at the Olympics.

Now, five years on, Taylor stands on the cusp of a world title shot in the pro ranks, racing to 6(4)-0 since signing up with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Promotions.

To commemorate her Olympic win, a spine-tingling promo – ‘Wage War on the Impossible’ – has been released.
