WATCH: Sky Sports cause stir by claiming Katie Taylor for Britain

Wicklow lightweight Katie Taylor [5(3)-0] looks set to fight for world honours in Dublin before the year is out, but the Bray woman is still subject to the occasional mislabeling.

Taylor was in the Sky Sports studios today for a live interview on Sky Sports News, however, before the segment, presenter Jim White would send social media into a meltdown by claiming the Irishwoman for Britain.

“Will Katie Taylor add her name to Britain’s list of world champions before the end of the year?” asked White, leading to an unsurprising volley of messages sent to Sky Sports reminding them that Taylor is Irish rather than British.

It’s not the first time such a slip has been made, with Taylor being called British by the Daily Telegraph back during her gold medal-winning campaign at the London Olympics and again by ESPN when she turned pro last year.

Taylor does indeed seem to be on course for a shot at world honours, with the title roadmap believed to be an American debut in the Summer before a return to Dublin and the 3Arena in October or November where she will most likely fight for the WBA title.

In her most recent fight at the end of last month, Taylor won a WBA title eliminator and the organisation’s Inter-Continental belt with a seventh round stoppage of previously undefeated German Nina Meinke at Wembley Stadium on the Joshua-Klitschko undercard.

The WBA’s current lightweight champ is Uruguayan Cecilia Comunales [14(9)-1(0)], however the South American has not defended her crown since last June and promoter Sampson Lewkowicz has announced that she is to move up in weight.
