WATCH: Champion v Champion – Michael Nevin v Rhys Moran

One of the potential match-ups of the Under-22 Championships took place at the quarter final stage over the weekend.

Champion was pitted against champion in the middleweight division, with both of last year’s Under-18s winners being drawn together for their respective opening bouts.

In the blue corner was Rhys Moran of St Paul’s Waterford, who won the first Under-18 Championships in 2016, while the winner of the second tournament and subsequent World Youth bronze medalist, Michael Nevin was in the red corner.

A high-quality clash, triple European gold medalist Nevin took the bout on a unanimous decision.

There was no quibbling either from the classy Déise fighter Moran, who described afterwards how he had been defeated by “an incredible boxer.”

“I can honestly put my hand on my heart and say I gave it my all – but f*ck me, what a top class act.”
