War-hungry Cam O’Connell searching for his legendary fight

Cam O’Connell [10(6)-0-1] tops the bill on Friday night in Edmonton, Canada, and the Red Deer fighter, as always, is hoping to be involved in a war.

The lightweight of Dublin descent faces Hungarian Bence Molnar [16(9)-7(1)], a former opponent of Belfast’s Paul Hyland Jr, at the Shaw Conference Centre on a card that also features Mike McWilliams.

Ahead of the clash with the tough Central European, O’Connell took time out of his preparations to speak to irish-boxing.com.

The 27 year old described how “I am excited to be fighting Bence Molnar and I wish him much luck.”

“I can’t predict how the fight is going to unfold, I’ve seen him fight – but haven’t seen him get hit hard and how he can handle a blow.”

“I’m going to give him a war, and I hope he can withstand all I have to give.”

“I will come out on top, the harder he goes the more it gives me and I am sure of a win.”

O’Connell’s need to engage in fan-friendly fights is apparent, and, while he notes he “can box when I I have to,” he explained that “I strive to be a warrior and I want to be viewed as a fighter who always gives it his all.”

“My goal is to have a war I can look back on and watch into my old age, in amazement that I did that, a Gatti-Ward, Provodnikov-Bradley, or more recently, a Salido-Vargas war.”

One of the best lightweights currently operating in Canada, O’Connell ruefully told of how “a Canadian title has entered the conversation plenty of times during my career and I would love to fight for it.”

“I would call out anyone but everyone in Canada is scared to put their undefeated pampered careers on the line.”

“We have tried to fight Canadians and it never works out.”

With his options in Canada limited, O’Connell outlined how “my eyes have refocused and I’m eyeing the NABF lightweight title in my future.”

“If I get offered a Canadian Title fight I will be all over it, but I can’t foresee anyone putting this on anytime soon.

While not overlooking the threat posed by Molnar, the ambitious puncher is looking to “have 6 fights this year and stay as busy and as active as I can.”

Indeed, for Irish readers, O’Connell reveals that he may be coming to a ring near you, as “I hope to start traveling as soon as possible and fight in Europe and Asia – and hopefully get a fight in Ireland.”

“Time is on my side so I’m going to continue the journey one fight, one round, one punch at a time.”
