VOTE: The Liffey Crane Hire Irish Boxer of the Month – AUGUST
August has come and gone and it’s now time for the third installment of the Liffey Crane Hire Boxer of the Month.
Moate light heavyweight Joe Ward took the inaugural prize following his third European gold medal, while Kane Tucker took the July gong after his Commonwealth Youth silver.
Public votes will be used alongside the choices of a panel of judges to determine the winner. Voting closes Thursday at midnight with results being announced Friday morning.

The World Championships took place across the end of August and the start of September, so Ward’s achievements will be considered for the August prize. The Irish team captain strolled to bronze in Hamburg, before overcoming Bektemir Melikuziev in an extremely tough semi final. In the final he pushed Cuban legend Julio La Cruz hard, but was forced to settle for silver.

From initially not being selected for the team, Michaela Walsh would go over to the EU Championships in Cascia and stormed to gold. The first Irish female fighter, other than Katie Taylor, to claim a major international gold, Walsh dominated the field out in Italy ahead of her move up to featherweight for the Commonwealth Games.

The St Mary’s boxer gave one of the great Irish performances at the EU Championships. After guaranteeing bronze, Harrington then dismantled Italian wonderkid Irma Testa in the semis in a quite frankly stunning display. The World silver medalist was then defeated by Finland’s Mira Potkonen in the final.

The Spartacus puncher was involved in two fire-fights at the EU Championships. She guaranteed bronze, her first major medal, following a war with Lauren Price, before being eliminated controversially in the semis by eventual gold medalist Nadine Apetz – after a fight where Walsh forced the German into a third round count.

Love him or hate him, it’s undeniable that the Crumlin convert performed better than anyone expected in his mega fight with Floyd Mayweather. ‘The Notorious,’ on his pro boxing debut managed to go ten rounds before being stopped by the five-weight champ.

The Foylesider in Florida was faced with his toughest fight to date on a card filmed by Golden Boy. He would duly dominate the undefeated Joshua Maxwell with a performance that caught the eye of TV execs and now looks set to fight on a big televised card in the near future.
