It was yesterday announced that Stephen Ormond will face Mexican-American Alejandro Luna in an IBF lightweight title eliminator on Friday August 5th at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia.

Luna is admittedly not the biggest name in the division, and is looking to move from prospect to contender status, so with that in mind below we give you everything you need to know about ‘El Charro’

Alejandro Luna
Record – 20(15)-0
Age – 24
Birthplace – Bellflower, California, USA
Fighting out of – La Puente, California, USA
Stance – Orthodox
Height: 5’8″
IBF Ranking – #10

Luna turned pro at aged 18 following an amateur career spanning over 100 fights including gold at the prestigious Junior Olympic underage tournament in America,

Formerly having fought under Gary Shaw and Diego De La Hoya, Luna is one of the most sought-after young prospects in America. After 17 fights Luna linked up with Al Haymon and has stepped up his level of opposition.

On the undercard of Cuellar-Darchinyan last June he pitched a near shut-out over eight rounds against faded former featherweight champ Cristobal Cruz. He followed this up with a win on the Santa Cruz-Mares undercard, knocking out Sergio Lopez inside four.

In January of this year Luna had a career-best win over gatekeeper Alan Herrera on the Danny Garcia v Robert Guerrero undercard, forcing him into an eighth round retirement

Luna comes from a family of competitive cowboys, and looked to have a promising career ahead of him on the rodeo circuit before choosing boxing. In a nod to his background, Luna’s ring nickname is ‘El Charro’ (Mexican Cowboy).

Style: An attacking boxing, Luna is considered in his offence, looking to work openings. That said, he is very much an inside fighter with a penchant for hooks, especially to the body. As his knockout percentage suggests, he definitely has power, but it’s more based on an accumulation of thudding shots rather than one-punch snap.
