Tyrone McKenna scores mighty knockout on Belfast bill

Making a brief foray back into journeymen, Tyrone McKenna scored an easy win tonight at the Waterfront Hall.

Following two successive wins against undefeated Dubliners, the Lenadoon light welter took on Hungarian Ferenc Katona on the ‘Battle of Belfast’ BoxNation show at the Waterfront Hall.

The journeyman, who formerly competed at middleweight, where he was stopped by upcoming Irish title challenger Darren Cruise, came to fight – but he was put away in the fourth round.

McKenna began sharply with crisp backhand lefts and sneaky short uppercuts before hurting the Hungarian with a volley of bodyshots.

It was a more even second – although ‘The Mighty Celt’ was comfortably on top and scored a particularly vicious looking shot to the solar plexus on the bell.

McKenna landed countless one-twos in the third, but Katona continued to crudely march forward undeterred.

Katona came out in the fourth very aggressively, momentarily pushing McKenna to the ropes, but a perfect uppercut from the Belfast man would put the Magyar down and out for the count.

The third successive stoppage victory for McKenna sees him move to 14(6)-0-1, while Katona falls to 8(4)-7(4)-1.

With the ticking over win in the bag, McKenna will now look toward a big domestic dust-up which is said to be taking place in September.
