Tyrone McCullagh aiming to banish unhappy amateur memories on Ulster Hall show

Tyrone McCullagh [12(6)-0] feels he has to right a few Ulster Hall wrongs when he returns to the famous venue and ring action on Friday March 29th.

Having overcome a minor injury problem the WBO European and BBBoC Celtic super bantamweight titleholder fights for the first time in 2019 on the undercard of the Luke Keeler v Conrad Cummings rematch.

‘White Chocolate’, who has recently enjoyed some verbal sparring with IBF world champion TJ Doheny, is keen to create some happy memories at the beautifully intimate venue.

The last time he fought there he suffered defeat to cult amateur figure Ryan Lindberg and the fighter who is hoping to bring boxing back to Derry is looking forward to celebrating victory at the venue come March.

“I got beaten at Ulster Hall in my last amateur fight in the Ulster final against Ryan Lindberg, who also beat Carl Frampton, Paddy Barnes*, Sean McComb and Luke Campbell. I feel I have to right a few wrongs,” said the 28-year-old Foylesider who claimed European bronze while in the vest.

“It’s an incredible atmosphere in there. Everyone gets packed into one small area. My fans travel anywhere anyway so it’ll be loud on the night. I can’t wait for it.”

McCullagh, who was one of the break out stars in 2018 with Celtic and WBO ranking title wins, had relatively big fights back-to-back against Joe Ham and Josh Kennedy but looks set for a more routine return to action, probably over six rounds, on a card that will be streamed live via YouTube.

“I haven’t been out since October, when I won the WBO European title, so it’ll be good to get in there and blow off the cobwebs off ahead of some big fights,” he added before sitting on the fence when asked about the main event.

“Conrad Cummings and Luke Keeler are going to put on a great show in the main event. I’m friendly with both of them and even if I wasn’t, I wouldn’t be able to call a winner anyway.”

“It’s great to be on that card and boxing alongside my good friends.”

Joining McCullagh on a busy card are gym-mates Tyrone McKenna and Sean McComb, as well as Gary Cully, Steven Ward, Steven Donnelly, Taylor McGoldrick, Padraig McCrory and debutants Sean Duffy Callum Bradley.

*Paddy has informed us that he was never beaten by Lindberg, fighting and beating the Immaculata man once.
