Trainor to debut in Indonisia

Former Irish Under 19 light-heavyweight champion Declan Trainor looks set to make his professional debut on the undercard of Chris John’s World featherweight title clash with Fernando David Saucedo in Jakarta, Indonisia on July 26.

The Warrenpoint, Co Down native, is currently based in Australia, where he is training in Harry’s Gym, Balcatta. Trainor had been contemplating a return to Ireland in a bid to qualify for the 2012 Olympics but has instead elected to ditch the headguard and vest and turn professional.

My first match will be on July 26 in Indonesia, on the undercard of Chris Johns title defence, Trainor told irish-boxing.com.

Trainors last contest on home soil saw him qualify for the final of the 2009 Ulster Senior Championships at heavyweight. However, a fractured cheekbone ruled him out of the final and ensured a lengthy lay off.

Although his last contest was at heavyweight, Trainor was always at the lower end of the heavyweight scale in terms of size and as such may opt to focus on the light-heavyweight rather than cruiserweight – division as a professional. However, he is likely to make his debut in the cruiserweight division

I dont know what weight I am going to go for yet but I am now getting paid to train full time and do a bit of personal training as well. Im training hard, but am nowhere near what I can be so lets just wait and see.

Trainors boxing career began in St Bronaghs ABC, Rostrevor and he is quick to point out the influence club coach Gavin Dougan has had on him.

All this came from a special man called Gavin Dougan, my boxing coach back home. I would not be where I am today only for him.

My dad Gary, mum Bronagh and brothers Stephen and Niall have also been very supportive. Im looking forward to boxing at home in the future. I just hope everything goes well and I can work my way to the top.
