Top teen reverses ‘return to amateur’ decision to sign with American promoters

Owen McDonagh has done a complete 360 and decided pro boxing is the route he should take.

The Cork super fly was unveiled as a new signing for Boxing Ireland Promotions last November but, before his pro debut, elected to return to the vest.

The young prospect intially decided against embarking on a pro career and recently revealed he would return to the amateur game.

Explaining his decision on social media back then, McDonagh said that “I feel like since I turned pro I could have done a lot more in the amateurs so I’m coming to take it all back.”

Turning pro aged 18 with no Senior amateur experience, McDonagh’s switch raised some eyebrows and, with time on his side, the young Rebel’s decision to fit back into a vest was welcomed.

A multi-time national champion in the underage ranks as well as an Irish International, the Leeside Lough fighter looked like he would add serious strength to the 52kg.

However, the teen has once again decided to explore a pro career.

It was announced over the weekend McDonagh would be following in the footsteps of fellow Mahon native Ryan O’Mahony by signing with American based promotional outfit MG Ring Productions.

MG Ring Productions are not the most established of American promoters, but are building a stable of fighters.

Along with O’Mahony, McDonagh  joins the likes of Iain Weaver, William Flenoy, Marcus Coney and even faded former heavyweight contender Danny Williams on the books of the relatively new promotional outfit.

It’s more positive boxing news for Cork fight fans, who can boast a first pro show in a decade when as Leeside Revolution plays out in the Neptune Stadium on July 20.

The Mahon pair join the likes of light middleweight world title hopeful Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan, Leeside Revolution bill topper and New York based fighter Noely Murphy and Ireland’s youngest pro James Power as Cork fighters on the pro circuit.
