TJ Doheny eyeing final eliminator following Australian return

TJ Doheny [16(12)-0] is ready to power forward in 2017 and claims it won’t be long before the boxing world knows what he is all about.

‘The Power’s’ career has been somewhat stop-start over the years, but he is adamant that he is now ready and prominently positioned to launch a World level assault.

The Murphys Boxing puncher, who holds an amateur win over Carl Frampton, is hoping to secure a World title eliminator in the not too distant future.

“Now that I’m sitting at #4 in the IBF 122lb world ratings it’s looking very likely that I am in one corner for a title eliminator with the #1 & #2 positions currently vacant,” Doheny explained to Irish-Boxing.com.

Japanese southpaw Ryosuke Iwasa [23(15)-2(2)] is ranked #3 with the body and the Portlaoise puncher feels that he is now close to a big fight.

“I was planning to move to 118 last year as it seemed like the fastest route to a title shot, but I’ll be staying put now. My time is coming! I feel more than ready and soon the world will know what I’m all about,” he continued.

After back to back knockout wins in America it was suggested the southpaw was closing in on big fights at the tail end of 2016.

However, he hasn’t been out since last October and momentum seemed to slow. The 30 year old with an impressive 75% knock ratio now explains a family issue back in Ireland meant fighting was the priority of late and he is now back in Oz as he awaits the birth of his first child.

He also has an ‘oil the ring rust’ fight scheduled Down Under for May 12th and, once that eight rounder is out of the way, he will target the big super bantamweight clashes.

“A serious family issue in Ireland set me back a couple of months but all is well now and I’m just happy to be getting back to business as I start to close in on the IBF junior featherweight title [current champion Yukinori Oguni].”

“I’m currently in Australia for the birth of my child who is due to arrive in the coming weeks. So while I’m here it seemed fitting to get a run out on May 12th in Sydney while I wait for much bigger things to come to fruition.”
