TJ Doheny and Danny Roman agree to unification clash

Just minutes after his world title win over Ryosuke Iwasa last August TJ Doheny was ‘joined’ in the ring by Tomoki Kameda.

The Japanese fighter confronted the new IBF super bantamweight champion and was quickly pushed away.

Things were a bit different in New York last night.

Doheny defended his red belt for the first time at The Theater at Madison Square Garden yesterday, dominating and stopping another Japanese fighter, Ryohei Takahashi after 11 rounds.

Afterwards the Portlaoise boxer was asked about the possibility of a unification with new Matchroom stablemate and WBA champion Danny Roman [26(10)-2(0)-1] and was more than happy to discuss.

“That’s the fight I want,” Doheny [21(15)-0] declared.

“That’s what we’re all in it for. Danny Roman is a great fighter, he’s got the WBA belt, I’ve got the IBF.”

“Danny – if you’re here. I haven’t seen you yet but if you want to get it on… ha ha ha.”

At this point, Doheny was joined in the ring by Roman who had been sitting ringside for the fight.

It was all smiles and fist-bumps though, with obvious respect from the pair.

Roman told Doheny “congratulations on your win, that was a tough opponent. Now that that’s over, let’s make it happen this unification.”

“From champion to champion, let’s give the best fight and let the best win.”

More than up for the fight, the Irishman addressed promoter Eddie Hearn.

“Eddie, you heard it!”

“You’ve got the orders from the fighters, let’s go, let’s dance.”

Analysing the fight that had just taken place, ‘The Power’ Doheny was happy with his night’s work.

The 32-year-old explained how “I was shaking off a bit of rust coming off a thumb injury.”

“I was about half a second too slow on my counter-punching but the main thing is I came here to defend my title and that’s exactly what I did.”

“Every time I hit him, I felt I was hurting him. The main thing is, we got the stoppage and we are moving on now.”
