Titanic Showdown weigh in details

The eagerly anticipated rematch between IBF World Super Bantamweight champion Kiko Martínez and Belfast’s sporting icon Carl ‘The Jackal’ Frampton is now just a day away. ‘TITANIC SHOWDOWN’ will take place at a purpose built outdoor arena in Belfast’s historic Titanic Quarter and is undoubtedly the biggest boxing event that Northern Ireland has ever seen. Martínez vs Frampton 2, ‘TITANIC SHOWDOWN’ is a truly global affair as the massive Belfast bill will be broadcast live across the World in countries including China, Russia, Brazil, France, Poland, Spain and the USA amongst many others.

Today’s weigh-in at the historic Ulster Hall was a packed house with over 1500 fans cramming into the oldest boxing venue in Belfast to witness Kiko Martínez and Carl Frampton making weight ahead of their massive IBF World Super Bantamweight title fight. After a rapturous applause Frampton weighed in at 8 stone, 9 pounds and 7 ounces. The champion Martínez was met by thunderous boos having held up the weigh-in for the championship bout by arriving thirty minutes late. When ‘La Sensacion’ finally stepped on the scales he weighed 8 stone, 9 pounds and 2 ounces. The ensuing face-off brought the biggest cheer of the day as Frampton confidently squared up to the man from Alicante before Martínez lashed out with a push. Once both men were separated the final photo call proceeded with more than a little tension in the air!

Belfast’s favourite boxing star Carl Frampton is now within touching distance of realising a lifelong dream as he bids to lift the World title on Saturday and in doing so embedding himself in his home city’s sporting folklore. The Tiger’s Bay native has captured the imagination of the boxing mad Belfast public who will turn out in their thousands on Saturday evening to cheer on their hero. The unique Titanic Quarter outdoor venue, set on the historic Titanic Slipways where the World famous ship was launched over a century ago, is a near sell-out, a mightily impressive feat by the twenty-seven year old Frampton given the temporary structure’s sixteen thousand capacity.

Also weighing in ahead of his first defence of the WBO European Featherweight title was Belfast’s popular Marc McCullough, who tipped the scales at 8 stone, 13 pounds and two ounces. His challenger, the Russian former World champion Dmitry Kirillov weighed slightly less at 8 stone, 12 pounds and 7 ounces. The talented McCullough took to the Ulster Hall stage amid a cacophony of noise as his following continues to grow with each fight, tomorrow night the man from the Shankill Road faces his toughest test to date.

Dungiven’s Eamonn ‘King Kane’ O’Kane looked supremely confident ahead of his IBF Intercontinental Middleweight title fight with Lithuania’s dangerous Virgilijus Stapulionis. IBF number 10-ranked Middleweight ‘King Kane’ looked in great physical condition and weighed 11 stone, 5 pounds and 2 ounces. His opponent Stapulionis weighed slightly more at 11 stone, 5 pounds and 5 ounces. Belfast’s undefeated Jamie Conlan weighed in at 8 stone, 2 pounds and 6 ounces for his vacant WBO Intercontinental Super Flyweight title fight against Mexico’s Jose Estrella. Unfortunately his opponent from Tijuana could not make the championship limit of 8 stone, 3 pounds, weighing in 5 ounces over. Subsequently the title will be on the line for Conlan only tomorrow night when these two square off in an exciting ten-round championship contest.

Coalisland’s undefeated Middleweight prospect Conrad ‘Dynamite’ Cummings weighed in at 11 stone, 7 pounds ahead of his six-round bout with Poland’s dangerous Robert Talarek, who weighed 11 stone, 7 pounds and 4 ounces. Belfast’s talented Super Featherweight prospect Anthony ‘The Apache’ Cacace tipped the scales at 9 stone, 6 pounds and 4 ounces, while his Polish opponent Dawid Knade weighed in slightly less at 9 stone, 5 pounds. Cacace makes his Cyclone Promotions debut tomorrow night having recently hooked up with trainer Shane McGuigan and faces off against the twenty-three year old Knade in a four-round Super Featherweight contest.

Limerick’s former European champion Willie ‘Big Bang’ Casey weighed in at 9 stone, 1 pound ahead of his six-round Featherweight contest against Georgia’s tough Giorgi Gachechiladze, who weighed in at 9 stone even. Belfast’s Welterweight prospect Matthew Wilton weighed in at 10 stone, 8 pounds for his four-round contest against Poland’s Adam Cieslak, who tipped the scales at 10 stone, 7 pounds and 7 ounces.

The weigh-in for Martínez vs Frampton 2, ‘TITANIC SHOWDOWN’ was by far the biggest weigh-in event that Northern Ireland has ever seen for a boxing match. The rapturous crowd cheered on their man Frampton until the roof nearly came off the historic Ulster Hall and with his World title fight now just one day away, the city of Belfast is truly buzzing in anticipation of the biggest boxing event Northern Ireland has ever witnessed. Tomorrow night’s World title contest between Martínez and Frampton promises to be one of the most memorable sporting events in the history of Northern Ireland.
