Three wins on Day 3 of European Youth Championships

Three Irish fighters moved to within one win of a medal at the European Youth Championships in Italy today – but two past European champions bowed out.

Tyrone light flyy Jude Gallagher, Kilkenny bantam Brendan McCarthy, and Sligo flyweight Dean Clancy all claimed impressive unanimous decision wins in Roseto, beating Ukraine, England, and Turey respectively.

Gallagher came through a heated battle with Kiev southpaw Ali Dagly, scoring with the cleaner shots to establish a lead which he never relented.

Clancy, a European Junior silver medalist last time out, put on an exhibition against Murat Ugurlu, toying with the Turk and taking a dominant win.

McCarthy turned in a textbook display to beat England’s Joe Tyres 30-27 across the board – he, like Clancy, bagging his second win of the tournament.

There was less joy though for European Junior champions Edward Donovan (2016) and Callum Walsh (2017).

Donovan lost on a split to Hungary’s Konstantin Barbosu, the European Schoolboy champion in 2014.

A tight fight, which was messy and exhilirating in equal measure, Limerick welter Donovan convinced one judge but the other four edged Barbosu in the slugfest.

Cork light welter Walsh put in a titanic performance versus Russia’s Ilya Popov and the Irish corner felt he had done enough – but the Riverstown teen was eliminated on a unanimous decision, with some harshly wide scores mixed in.

There are four bronze medals up for grabs tomorrow with Dean Clancy, Edward Barrett, and the Aoibhes – Ginty and Carabine – all in quarter-final action while Mary Geraghty and World and European Youth medalist Caitlin Fryers are out in the Last 16.
