Three wins for Ireland on Day 2 of European Youth Championships

Ireland’s young guns claimed three wins from four on Day 2 of the European Youth Championships in Zagreb, Croatia today.

Francis Cleary, who now joins his Olympic BC club-mate James Cleary in the last-16, James Hughes and John Joyce advanced.

But Cormac Long bowed out at the last 32 phase of the competition this afternoon after losing to Lithuanian light-heavy Algirdas Daniulus.

Joyce set up a Celtic derby with Scotland’s Peter George after recording a unanimous decision over Turkish southpaw Ogulcan Ozturk, shortly after Cleary show his class to decision tough Bulgarian bantam Katin Arsenov.

James Hughes also impressed today. The Kildare heavyweight saw off the challenge of Poland’s Alexsander Ceiejewski.

Forty one nations are competing at the 24th edition of the tournament in Zagreb.
