Three more into European Junior finals- Five silvers guaranteed

Lisa O’Rourke, Lauren Dempsey and Patrick Myers joined Ellie Mai-Gartland and Sinainn Glynn in Tuesday’s finals at the European Junior Championships in Anapa, Russia.

The trio posted impressive victories today, with Myers seeing off Croatia’s Loncarie Borna on a unanimous decision in the final bout featuring an Irish boxer on a hectic day for Team Ireland boxers, coaches and staff in Anapa.

The medal colour for Ireland going into the final day of competition is now at least five silver and nine bronze.

O’Rourke beat Germany’s Annemarie Schierle in the light-middle class and Dempsey decisioned Slovak feather Michaela Turacova.

But Jon McConnell, in his fourth fight in Russia, was very unlucky not to upgrade his bronze to at least silver and Irish female captain Leanne Murphy bowed out after a close bout with Russia southpaw Maria Berstenova. Barry O’Connor also lost to Russia.

Earlier today, EMai-Gartland and Glynn moved to within striking distance of gold.

The Tipperary and Offaly duo beat England’s Sameenah Toussan and Danielle Marshall on unanimous decisions en route to Tuesday’s bantam and light finals.

Mai-Gartland consistently cut down the distance between herself and the rangy Toussan to deliver shots off both hands in all three rounds en route to a place in the 54kg decider.

Glynn was giving away a lot of height to the towering Marshall, but the Irish lightweight wasn’t giving anything away on the scorecards against the English champion with the Ireland titlist winning unanimously after a power-packed performance.

Michael Donohoe, Breda Quilligan, Leah Gallen, Kaitlin Doyle and Kori Goad had to settle for bronze this afternoon. Big performances from all five who will be on the medals podium tomorrow.

Gallen was unlucky to go out on a split against Italy’s Miriam Tomasone and Goad bounced back from taking a standing count in the first round to put Poland’s Olowia Toborek under severe pressure in the remaining two frames of a hard-punching contest.

Donohoe gave a fine account of himself against Russia’s gold medal favourite Mikhail Grigorian in the opening bout on today’s card.
