“This is worth the gamble” – Ger Healy looking to cash in on Ireland’s Last Man Standing

Gerard Healy [6(0)-4(1)-1] claims he has nothing to lose and everything to gain going into a tournament with a minimum of €25,000 on offer to the winner.

The Belfast fighter has benefited after withdrawals whittled the initially-announced eight down to five in recent weeks and was on Wednesday night confirmed for the Ireland’s Last Man Standing competition.

The Prizefighter-style single-elimination eight-man tournament gifts ‘Boom Boom’ and the other contestants the chance to pocket €25,000 for victory, 5000 for the fastest knockout and €1000 for any knockout – and it’s not lost on the Ray Ginley-trained pro that he can make more money in one night than he has over his entire seven year career.

While the National Stadium-hosted March 3rd fight night offers the chance to raise your profile considering it’s being broadcast live on TG4 and offers passage to a title shot Healy has been screaming for, the 34-year-old is going all out to raise his bank balance.

Indeed, despite all his victories coming via points, the popular puncher has the knockout bonus on his mind.

“It would be more than I ever made in my career, as people well know professional boxing is hard game with small rewards but this is worth the gamble,” Healy told Irish-Boxing.com

“I’ll definitely be looking for the knockout bonus. I am not known as KO artist but I’ll show on the night I can bang. When I am up against it I fight at my best.”

The late entry to the contest may not be as fancied as fighters with more experience at middle and super middle, but the man who has recently moved up from 154lbs is adamant he is in it to win it.

The Belfast boxer has proved time and again that he is willing to take big fights and risks, and only recently was signed to face fellow Last Man Standing hopeful and former top amateur Sean McGlinchey – only for the Celtic Nations title fight to fall through.

The rewards are there, and Healy plans to grab them with both gloves.

“I feel brilliant. It’s great to be in the competition. All the hard work as pro paying off. There are some great fighters in the line-up but I have nothing to lose an plenty to gain. I am in to win not here to make up numbers. I am going to really go for this time.”
