The Liffey Crane Hire Irish Boxer of the Month – WINTER SPECIAL

With the Christmas period and the general lack of action in January, we have decided to mix the December and January Liffey Crane Hire Irish Boxer of the Month awards together for a Winter spectacular.

In total we have 14 nominees.

Phil Sutcliffe

The heavy-punching Crumlin fighter returned from his controversial loss to Josh Leather and jumped into a tough fight with unbeaten Kazakh Andreas Maier – who he stopped after a three-round fire-fight.

Tyrone McCullagh
Derry
Super Bantamweight
‘White Chocolate’ finally got the step up he craved in Belfast at the start of December and he destroyed unbeaten German Tom Tran in five one-sided rounds.

Eric Donovan
Kildare
Featherweight
Lilywhite Lightning topped his third bill of 2017 and absolutely dominated game Spaniard Juancho Gonzalez – who had missed weight for their BUI Celtic title clash

Jay Byrne
Dublin
Welterweight
The Dubliner surprised everyone – bar himself – with a decisive win over Ger Whitehouse to win the BUI Celtic title and he will now go on to fight Craig O’Brien for the Irish light middleweight belt.

Stephen McAfee & Colin O’Donovan
Dublin & Cork
Super Featherweight
The pair combined to put on one of the best fights of the year – with the blood and guts final round being the most exciting three minutes in the National Stadium in recent memory.

Sean Turner
Heavyweight
Dublin
‘Big Sexy’ went away to Switzerland and not only upset the odds but absolutely dominated EBU-EE champion and former David Haye opponent Arnold Gjergjaj, stopping him in the eighth round.

Mick Conlan

Belfast
Chief support on the big Vasyl Lomachenko v Guillermo Rigondeaux bill at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, Conlan put on his best performance yet, boxing beautifully to outclass Luis Fernando Molina.

Spike O’Sullivan
Middleweight
Cork
The Celtic Warriors man went to Canada and changed his career with a seventh-round stoppage of touted American Antoine Douglas. Big fights await.

TJ Doheny
Super Bantamweight
Laois
Doheny moved into pole position for an IBF title shot, decisively beating Thailand’s Mike Tawatchi in Bangkok in a final eliminator that saw a late change of opponent, season, and country.

Dublin
The first of a number of fighters who did the double, the rangey Glasnevin boxer claimed the Intermediate title and then retained his U22 title – up next are the Elites.

Niamh Earley
Flyweight
Kildare
The World Junior silver medalist is stepping up to the adult ranks with aplomb – taking Intermediate and U22 honours and the Ryston boxer was crowned Best Senior (Intermediate) Boxer at the IABA awards at the weekend.

Kenneth Doyle
Light Welterweight
Dublin
Everything has come together recently for the Monkstown fighter who won back-to-back Irish titles after years of constantly coming close.

Aoife O’Rourke
Middleweight
Roscommon
The Castlerea boxer has exploded onto the scene with some big-hitting displays as she claimed top honours at the Inters and the U22s.

Kevin Sheehy
