The Golden Bullet – Anto Cacace must take advantage of title opportunity

Anthony Cacace [17(7)-1(0)] has been handed a ‘golden oppurtunity’ in more ways than one suggests manager Pat Magee.

The Belfast talent has been handed a second shot at the British super featherweight title and will challenge champion Sam Bowen after invoking his mandatory status.

The when and where have yet to be officially declared, but Frank Warren will promote the fight and the bout looks destined for Saturday July 13th on a card to be headlined by a vacant British heavyweight title clash between young unbeaten prospects Nathan Gorman and Daniel Dubois.

Magee believes it’s much more than a fight for domestic honours.

The experience manager, who guided the success of Brian Magee, no relation, believes its a fight with real world ramifications.

‘The Apache’ got back into the swing of things with a good win over Alan Castillo in London in February on the Chris Eubank v James DeGale undercard.

That fight looked to be the start of an association with Al Haymon, who is venturing into the UK market via Richard Poxon and ITV and it seemed as the former Emerald and Cyclone fighter would go the world ranking title route and he was installed into the WBA ladder.

However, Magee explains that there is an element of double whammy to this clash as a prestigious trinket is on the line and such is both fighters world rankings that it could help the winners world hopes.

“This is a golden opportunity for Anthony. The British title would be important enough but this is about more than the British title because both men are world rated. Anthony is ranked 13 with the WBA and Bowen is ranked nine with the WBO so the winner will push closer towards a possible world title opportunity,” Magee told David Kelly of the Belfast Telegraph.

Bowen [15(11)-0] impressively won the title versus Maxi Hughes last April and ‘The Bullet’ subsequently signed with Warren, first beating Mexican Horacio Cabral to claim the WBO Inter-Continental rankings belt before coming through Scot Jordan McCorry in a British title defence in March.

The Carl Greaves fighter has long been a prospect of note and Magee believes he is even a tougher test than Martin J Ward – who edged Cacace back in the summer of 2017.

The veteran fight boss described how “Bowen is the toughest opponent that Anthony has faced so far in his career. He’s a hard puncher, very strong and he’s relentless so this is a big test and everything needs to be right for him to win.”

“Everything is on the line for both guys but maybe even more so for Anthony because this is his second shot at the British title. He’s very hungry to go and win the title and then we can push for an even bigger fight.”
