The Byrne Acquisition – Jay Byrne signs big new deal

Sam Kynoch can go from cursing Jay Byrne’s ring success to celebrating it after he today added the Dublin puncher to his stable.

The Scottish fight boss has, on three occasions, brought the late-to-the-game fighter across the Irish Sea to provide opposition for some of the talent in his stable.

Byrne [9(2)-6(2)] first lost to Paul Kean in a BUI light middleweight title in Glasgow, but won the BBBofC Celtic Title – a strap a British licensed fighters use as a British title stepping stone – with victory over Marc Kerr.

The former footballer then managed to defend the strap on another Kynoch show and against another Kynoch fighter, Stefan Sanderson, in March of this year.

The promoter, who has also promoted shows that hosted title fights for Keane McMahon and Dylan McDonagh, has now decided to join team Byrne and has signed ‘The Negotiator’ to a managerial contract.

“I am delighted to be working with Jay as he is someone who is always willing to take opportunities – and it has paid off for him over the course of his last few fights,” Kynoch told Irish-Boxing.com. 

The Scottish fight maker revealed he has Summer and September plans for a fighter, who has twice threatened to retire from the game.

“We are hoping to get Jay out before the end of summer and we are weighing up a few options for September as we speak.”

The Byrne acquisition may have some wondering if Kynoch is eyeing Ireland as a market he can break into, but the promoter revealed that isn’t the case. However, the fighter, who doubles up as a manager, will be open to opportunities at home.

“It’s a management deal so Jay is likely to box both in Ireland and Scotland – in addition to anywhere else opportunities present themselves. From a promotional perspective I do not plan to promote in Ireland.”
