“The boss is back” – Joe Ward to remain amateur

Joe Ward won’t be turning pro just yet.

The Moate light heavyweight, who is frequently described as the ‘most naturally talented’ Irish boxer in our Low Blows series, was rumoured to be seriously exploring promotional offers following his disappointment at the Olympic Games, with an outfit in America believed to be pushing hard for his signature.

However, the fighter suffered a shocking, and somewhat controversial, defeat to Carlos Andres Mina of Ecuador in Rio has revealed he will enter the National Elite Championships next month.

It is believed that the 23 year old four-time Senior champion is targeting World gold and an unprecedented third European gold, and will remain in the vest until at least September of this year.

Ward said that “I can’t wait for the seniors and to win my fifth senior title. The boss is back. I’m back with a bang in 2017.”
