Team Northern Ireland finish second in boxing medal table

Northern Ireland finished in second spot in the medals table at the boxing event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

England, Northern Ireland, who commanded No. 1 position in the boxing event at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India, Australia, Scotland and Canada, in that order, secured the top five positions.

However, Northern Ireland’s boxers, in a remarkable achievement considering that they were up against full national sides, won the most medals, two gold, two silver and five bronze, of any of the boxing squads competing in Glasgow.

Paddy Barnes (gold), Michael Conlan (gold), Michaela Walsh (silver), Joe Fitzpatrick (silver) and Alanna Audley-Murphy, Sean Duffy, Sean McGlinchy, Connor Coyle and Stephen Donnelly, with five bronze medals wins, finished in podium positions.

Walsh pursued Olympic champion Nicola Adams all the way down to the final bell and a split decision. The Belfast fly, and Adams, who is ranked No. 1 in the World, were tied on a majority draw – 38-38, 38-38 and 39-37 (to Adams) – after four rounds.

But when it went back to the judges that scored it level – in the 10-point must scoring system’s equivalent of a countback – one of the judges leaned toward the Leeds fighter.

John Conlan, Eddie Bolger and Stephen Friel were working Northern Ireland’s corner in Glasgow.
