Team confirmed for Commonwealth Games

The team that will represent Northern Ireland next year at the Commonwealth Games has this morning been confirmed.

A 13-person boxing panel was announced alongside the rest of the team for the Gold Coast today in Newtownabbey.

The squad was selected over the past month, with the reinvigorated Ulster Elite Senior Championships at the end of November playing a large role in determining the make up of the panel.

Medalists last time out in Glasgow, Alanna Nihell, Michaela Walsh, and Steven Donnelly will all once again travel.

Gold medalists at the 2015 Commonwealth Youths in Samoa, slick starlets James McGivern and Aidan Walsh will be looking to step up on the big stage.

A high-quality team, Sean McComb, Kurt Walker, and Brendan Irvine will all look to add to their major international medal tallies.

Also included are Dee Sullivan, Conor Wallace, Stephen McMonagle, Carly McNaul, and Kristina O’Hara.

The majority of the team were Ulster Elite champions in November, aside from Walker who missed the tournament due to injury and both Carly McNaul and Stephen McMonagle who lost in the Ulsters to fighters ineligible for the Commonwealth Games.

Last time out in 2014, Irish boxers claimed a record nine medals from 11 participants.
