Team Captains Confirmed for European Under-22 Championships

Middleweights Gabriel Dossen and Aoife O’Rourke have been named captains of the Irish team for the upcoming fourth edition of the European Under-22 Championships which begin in Vladikavkaz, Russia, tomorrow.

Both Connacht fighters claimed Irish Elite 75kg titles last month and also participated in the tournament last year in Romania – with O’Rourke winning silver and Dossen agonisingly missing out on a bronze.

Irish team manager Stephen Molloy confirmed last night that the Galway and Roscommon pair were named as the Irish male and female skippers respectively at the 34-nation tournament which starts tomorrow [March 8th] and runs until next Sunday [March 17th, St Patrick’s Day.

“It’s a proud moment for me to captain the Ireland male team. We have a strong squad here and we are quietly confident that we can do well,” said Olympic’s Dossen who has claimed World and European Youth bronze for Ireland and is tipped by many for Tokyo.

The middleweights will lead a ten-strong Irish team that features a further three Elite champs – Adam Hession, Amy Broadhurst, and Davey Oliver Joyce – alongside the Niamh Earley, Shaune O’Callaghan, Pierce O’Leary, and Paddy Donovan.

No medals were plundered in the 2017 edition but Jason Quigley and Hughie Myers claimed gold and silver respectively at the inaugural tournament.
