Taylor: IABA could have done more in Olympic aftermath

OLYMPIC champion Katie Taylor believes the IABA should have seized a golden opportunity and used the countries London 2012 heroics to further promote Irish boxing.

Taylor, Paddy Barnes, Michael Conlan and John Joe Nevin returned from the games with medal’s draped around their necks and the best female puncher on the planet believes such success was a perfect platform to attract more interest in the sport.

Taylor, who is mid preparations for this year’s World Championships in South Korea in November, feels the IABA should have put on a show with the Olympic team.

“It does annoy me I suppose [the lack of marketing], looking back on things now they could have made a load of money for the boxers after they came back when these amateur boxers would have been household names,” Taylor explained to the Examiner.

“I don’t think amateur boxing gets enough recognition, it’s our most successful sport but yet it’s the least publicised sport.

“I just have to get on with things and the publicity hopefully will come. It was completely a nobrainer, they should have put a show on with all the Olympians, they would have sold the stadium out but what can you do?”
