Taylor fights for record sixth Euro title as a better fighter than London 2012

KATIE Taylor cemented her status as the greatest female fighter on the planet when she claimed lightweight gold in London 2012. However, the Bray sensation and Irish sporting legend has improved since her Olympic success claims her father and coach Peter Taylor.

The Olympic, World and European champion will attempt to capture a record sixth consecutive European title in the tournament set to begin this weekend in Bucharest and her coach thinks she goes into the tournament a better fighter than she was two years ago.

“We have improved in the last month with more physical work than what we normally do,” Peter Taylor said.

“She’s lifting a lot heavier weights, and hopefully it’ll come to fruition through this tournament.”

Peter Taylor noted that Katie’s speed, which he called her “greatest asset”, has also improved.

“I think she’s improved since the Olympic Games, by four or five percent, which is huge at this level. I think they were shocked that a girl can do what she did” – Taylor added addressing Katie’s recent male sparring partners, the French and Korean number ones.

Taylor goes into this tournament not only as favourite to collect gold, but as the poster girl for the sport, but her father claims pressure never takes its toll.

“She loves being number one in the world… She’s really looking forward to boxing. She can’t wait to get in the ring.”
