Talk of all Belfast Frampton v Conlan clash is ‘optimistic’ says ‘The Jackal’

Mick Conlan will have to make a meteoric rise to World level if he is to have any chance of fighting Carl Frampton suggests ‘The Jackal’ himself.

Ireland’s first ever unified World champ, Frampton has been a name that has cropped up with regard to Conlan since the two time Olympian revealed he was turning pro.

Indeed, it seemed something the press were keen to push in recent months. The Top Rank fighter, who makes his debut in Madison Square Garden tonight, welcomed the link and at one stage leveled the match a ‘dream fight’ at one stage.

However, speaking to Andy Waters of the Irish News while he was ringside to watch Mick’s brother Jamie Conlan fight Frampton claimed the all-Irish fight was unlikely.

The two weight World champion, who most suggest Conlan will have to eclipse if he wants to become Ireland’s greatest ever fighter, hopes to be retired within six fights and would be surprised if Conlan had reached his level in that time frame.

“It’s a bit off, he’s having a six-rounder and he’s only making his debut,” said Frampton when asked about a possible clash.

“That’s a wee bit optimistic at this point in time, but who knows what can happen in the future? Mick is a great fighter, with great potential and a great team behind him but I’m looking to call it a day after about six more fights so if he gets up to that level by the time I’ve had another five or six fights then who knows?”

“I like Mick, I like his family, they’re good people and I wish him well. I don’t know much about his opponent, but it’s his debut and they obviously expect him to win. Hopeful he does the business and looks the part.”
