Strong Chemistry Cup team announced

Former European champion Joe Ward will be aiming for his second Chemistry Cup gold medal in Halle, Germany later this month.

The Moate BC southpaw claimed gold at the 39th edition of the tournament following an impressive victory over Russia’s Egor Mekhontsev, who won Olympic gold in London a few months after his reversal to the Irish Elite champion.

Ward has been named in a ten-strong squad for the 41st edition of the Chemistry Cup. The tournament will run from May 28th to May 31st in Halle.

The Irish squad have been in Halle since last weekend training with the German No. 1 and No.2 squads, the Russian No. 1 and 2 squads, France. Korea and Netherlands.

Olympic champion Kate Taylor and Ceire Smith are also training with Team Ireland in Halle, but return to Ireland directly from the training camp in Halle in time to travel to Romania for the European Championships commencing May 31st.

A reminder that while Ireland did not compete in the 2013 edition of the “Chemiepokal”, Michael Conlan, David Oliver Joyce and Adam Nolan secured bronze at the 2012 Chemistry Cup.
