Steven Ward believes Belfast buzz can help give him the edge versus Liam Conroy

Steven Ward [11(4)-0] isn’t one for trash talk and, having formerly been a sparring partner for his next opponent, doesn’t expect any verbals in the coming weeks.

The aptly nicknamed ‘Quiet Man’ takes on Liam Conroy for the WBO European light heavyweight rankings title at the Ulster Hall on Friday June 21st.

While he doesn’t plan to sling mud, Ward does believe that it will be a hostile atmosphere on the night and thinks that a passionate Belfast base could prove a major advantage.

“Neither of us are big talkers so I doubt there’ll be any disrespect in the build-up to this one. We’re both happy in what we’re doing,” clarified the Commonwealth silver medallist and BUI Celtic champion.

Ward has always enjoyed good support and imagines that his following will be bigger than ever on June 21st when he steps up several levels against Conroy [17(9)-4(2)-1].

The Newtownabbey man has a tough test against the former English champion and recent British title challenger and is comforted by his backing.

Ward explained how “I think Belfast is one of, if not the best place to fight. I love being from Belfast having the crowd support me when I fight there, making all kinds of noise.”

“A ring is a ring but being at home is more comfortable because I can see the kids the day before the fight and it just makes everything seem more normal.”

“The atmosphere in there will be electric. I get goosebumps just thinking about it. It was great last time but I can only imagine what this one is going to be like.”
