Steven Donnelly hopes he caught the eye of Eddie Hearn with win on Amir Khan card

With two wins in the bag, Steven Donnelly is keen to be progressed quickly and hopes that he caught the eye of one of the world’s premier promoters on Saturday night.

The Ballymena light middleweight opened the dramatic Amir Khan v Samuel Vargas Matchroom card at the Arena Birmingham on Saturday and completely dominated tough Nicaraguan Miguel Aguilar over four rounds.

With Eddie Hearn sitting front row, it was one-way traffic for Donnelly who almost had his opponent out of there in the final round.

It was a second win in three weeks for the Rio Olympian following his debut at Windsor Park last month and ‘The Donn’ was happy with how he performed.

Speaking to IFL TV post-fight, Donnelly admitted that “I am very pleased – compared to my debut. There was pressure going into my debut, there was a small bit of pressure – but I knew after my debut that would settle me into the pro game.”

“I showed what I am all about tonight. He was a tough tough guy, I hurt him with some serious shots, but he was there to the very end, as I knew he would be. Overall I am delighted with that performance.

“I was more settled, I knew what was going to happen, I just stuck to my boxing, I listened to my corner and everything went well. I was really pleased with it. Out of ten – it was a seven or eight, there’s still more to show.”

Having turned 30 last week and with extensive World Series of Boxing experience behind him, Donnelly wants to be fast-tracked in the pro game.

Fight number three is already scheduled – at the Titanic Exhibition Centre in Belfast on Friday October 5th.

Donnlly outlined how “I am only starting, really, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

“I am out again on October 5th in Belfast. I know I can go far with the right team behind and the right team is behind me.”

“I just need Eddie to sign me up now!”

While his Hearn comment was somewhat in jest, Donnelly is keen to be signed up by a major promoter and believes that his performance on Saturday will have been noticed by the Matchroom boss.

“I’d say he was impressed,” reasoned Donnelly.

“It’s all about getting that break and, if I can get it, I am sure Eddie can push me on and I can show what I’m made of.”

“Katie Taylor will tell him what I am all about, let’s do it Eddie!”
