Stephen Ormond aiming to set up final big fights

Stephen Ormond [26(13)-5(1)] is looking to set up a big fight later this year – after he makes his return at the Brentwood Centre on Saturday March 9th.

The Dublin lightweight has had his first bout of the year confirmed and the 35-year-old is keen to make a major final splash.

The fight on the MTK card, which will be streamed live online, will be Ormond’s first fight since his notable win over Ghanaian George Ashie in Glasgow last August.

Ashie was #15 with the WBO going into that bout but, frustratingly, Ormond’s win did not see him take a ranking with the body whose current champion is the peerless Vasyl Lomachenko.

‘The Rock’ outlined how “I’m very happy to be getting back in the ring. I never stop training but it’s good to get a date and shake off the rust at the start of the year.

“It was a good win for me last time out. The game plan worked well and we’re looking to build on that now. I’m hoping to stay active and get the ball rolling again.”

Ormond will fight in a six-rounder against a to-be-confirmed foe and wants a big fight afterwards.

The Clondalkin Celtic Warriors man explained how “I’m keen to get back into a title fight soon, but as I haven’t been in the ring since last year it’s good to get this fight first and then target bigger things later in the year.”

The main event of the card in Brentwood in three weeks’ time sees Portsmouth-Belfast welter Michael McKinson defend his WBC International Silver title against Ryan Kelly.

There is also a Southern Area title fight between Mikey Sakyi and Idris Hill, while there are also undercard appearances for the likes of Shaquille Day, DP Carr, Daniel Egbunike, Matt McCarthy, Gino Kanters, Kaan Hawes, Martin McDonagh, Mitchell Frearson, Nurtas Azhbenov, Bradley Haxell, James Hawley, and Harley Benn.
