Stephen McMonagle eliminated from Commonwealths | Tomorrow’s Schedule

Big Stephen McMonagle has been eliminated from the Commonwealth Games in Australia this morning.

The fifth Irish fighter in action today, the Letterkenny boxer was defeated in the super heavyweight quarter-finals on the Gold Coast.

On a day when Northern Ireland guaranteed three boxing bronze medals, McMonagle was unable to make it a fourth as he was eliminated by New Zealander Patrick Mailata.

Mailata had acted as sparring partner for Anthony Joshua ahead of the Brit’s world title unification with another Kiwi, Joseph Parker, last month and the physically huge fighter was too strong for McMonagle and took a unanimous decision win.

McMonagle was the final Irish fighter in action on a great day for the team, with Kurt Walker and Aidan and Michaela Walsh securing bronze medals.

Tomorrow is another massive medal day with six Irish fighters in action. First up is light flyweight Kristina O’Hara who will look to upgrade her bronze to silver versus Kiwi Tasmyn Benny at 3:15am.

From then on it’s quarter-finals with fighters looking to guarantee bronze. Lightweight Alanna Nihell takes on England’s Paige Murney at 4:15am with the pair having traded wins recently. At 5:15am Brendan Irvine faces Botswanan Rajab Mahommed and at 5:45am Steven Donnelly takes on Samoan slugger Henry Tyrell at middleweight.

In the ‘evening’ session, flyweight Carly McNaul is up against Nigerian Ayisat Oriyomi at 9:45am before, finally, James McGivern takes on Mauritian veteran Jean John Colin in the lightweight quarters at 11:00am.

All times are Irish time. The Gold Coast is nine hours ahead.
