Stephen McAfee rewarded with promotional deal after taking Donovan risk

Stephen McAfee [5(2)-1(1)-1] has linked up with Boxing Ireland Promotions as he looks to come back from the first defeat of his pro career.

The Sallynoggin slugger lost to Boxing Ireland’s Eric Donovan in the headline fight of the TG4-aired Clash of the Titans bill back in March, being stopped to the body in the fourth round of their Irish featherweight title fight..

However, having stepped up to the mark and having fought aggressively at the National Stadium, McAfee impressed many – including Boxing Ireland who have signed the Dubliner up on a promotional contract.

McAfee will remain managed by his trainer Jonathan Lewins as he looks to rebuild on a busy domestic scene at featherweight and super featherweight.

The ambitious former kickboxer and Monkstown amateur headliner Celtic Clash 5 and was due to headline Celtic Clash 7 and now rubberstamps his association with Dublin’s preeminent outfit.

A new fight date for ‘Showtime’ will be confirmed shortly.

Boxing Ireland boss Stephen Sharpe said that “myself and Leonard [Gunning] are delighted to offer Stephen a promotional contract.”

“Stephen did what so many other fighters balked from in fighting Eric Donovan and we said straight after that fight that we would stick by Stephen and this is that promise in motion.”

“We have also developed a very strong relationship with Stephens manager and trainer Jonathan Lewins who is now training two of our lads [Dominic Donegan and Kevin Cronin] and we envisage continuing to expand our stable of fighters under Jonathan.”

“We have agreed a path forward for Stephen with his team and will look to have Stephen back challenging for titles before the year’s end.”
