Step up but no title for top prospect Gary Cully

Gary Cully [5(2)-0] won’t get the chance to win a first pro title this Friday night but the Naas lightweight will still take a step up.

Having seen numerous offers to other Irish fighters rebuffed, Cully was being primed for a BUI Celtic title fight with unbeaten Welsh prospect Lance Cooksey [7(1)-0] on the Belfast BoxNation card at the Titanic Exhibition Centre.

However, the Cardiff puncher has steered clear of the proposed bout leaving Cully again without a title opponent.

The 22-year-old will still make a step-up on the ‘Danger At The Docks’ bill where he will fight over six rounds for the first time.

It’s a rise in rounds for the Kildare southpaw and a very solid opponent in Sunderland slugger Jordan Ellison [10(1)-17(4)].

With Cully already holding an impressive win over the much-larger Kane Baker, it probably can’t be said that he takes a massive step up in opposition here but the match-up is certainly a progressive and potentially dangerous one.

22-year-old Ellison is one of the strongest away fighters on the circuit, with seven ‘away corner’ wins to his name and numerous narrow and dubious defeats.

The Englishman will be familiar to Irish fans having given Commonwealth silver medalist Joe Fitzpatrick a huge scare in 2016 in a four-rounder at the York Hall, dropping him and being edged out by a point, as well as sharing rounds with Jono Carroll and Marco McCullough.

Cully’s fellow Pete Taylor-trained fighter, David Oliver Joyce, this year became one of the select few to stop Ellison, bringing a halt to their competitive bout in the sixth round.

Ellison should test the lilywhite in a bout which is hoped will be aired live.

Sarto’s Cully last fought in June where he saw a major step-up test versus Zsoltan Szabo fall through late and he instead eased past Nicaraguan journeyman Reynaldo Cajina on the Mick Conlan Homecoming undercard at the SSE Odyssey Arena.
