STAT KING: Mick Conlan ranks highly with CompuBox among top prospects

If CompuBox are right, Michael Conlan [10(6)-0] has a bright future ahead.

The people behind the computerized scoring system and leading fight stat provider have compiled a list of their five top US based prospects and compared them statistically over recent fights.

Among the top five is our very own Conlan, and the Top Rank fighter’s performances in his last five fights were compared to Devin Haney (last 4 fights), Vergil Ortiz (last 5 fights), Shakur Stevenson (last 5 fights), and Teofimo Lopez (last 4 fights) in a total of 10 offensive and defensive categories.

The five Conlan fights under review are his five from 2018 – stoppages of Nicola Cipoletta and David Berna alongside distance wins over Jason Cunningham Ibon Larrinaga, and Adeilson Dos Santos.

Statistically the Belfast fighter, who himself is adamant hasn’t flirted with top form, comes out favourably.

While potential future foe Stevenson is hit less, Conlan, who fights in Madison Square Garden on St Patrick’s Day, is joint first in terms of punches landed per round averaging 20.7 alongside Ortiz.

The Olympic bronze medallist is the busiest of the prospects throwing just under 70 punches per fight stanza  – but he is the least accurate of the five with a connect percentage of 29.7.

Comparing across the categories, Conlan trumps Stevenson in landed punches per round, thrown punches per round, jabs landed per round, and power punches landed per round. Stevenson’s figures see him ahead in total connect percentage, power connect percentage, opponent’s total connect percentage, opponent’s power connect percentage, opponent’s punches landed per round, and the Plus/Minus measure.

Across all five prospects across all ten measures, Conlan places first in two categories, second in four, third in one, fourth in none, and last in three.
